## Biography

J.D. Cannon was an American actor. Born John Donovan Cannon in Salmon, Idaho, he trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, with his studies interrupted by service in the US Army during the Second World War. He appeared in numerous stage productions on and off Broadway before establishing a career in film and television.

Cannon is best known for his regular role as Chief of Detectives Peter B. Clifford in the television series *McCloud* (1970–1977). His film credits include *Cool Hand Luke* (1967), *Cotton Comes to Harlem* (1970), *Raise the Titanic* (1980) and *Death Wish II* (1982). He made over eighty guest appearances on television series including *Law & Order*, *Murder, She Wrote* and *Bonanza*, and received a Primetime Emmy nomination.
