## Biography

J. Farrell MacDonald was an American character actor and director. He appeared in over 325 films from 1911 to 1951, often in supporting roles, and directed forty-four silent films between 1912 and 1917. He was the principal director for L. Frank Baum's Oz Film Manufacturing Company.

MacDonald began his career as a singer in minstrel shows and toured with stage productions. He graduated from Yale University in 1903. He frequently appeared in films directed by John Ford, Frank Capra and Preston Sturges. Notable roles include The Photographer in *Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans* (1927), Mac the barman in *My Darling Clementine* (1946) and 'Sourpuss' in *Meet John Doe* (1941). He was married to actress Edith Bostwick until her death in 1943.
