## Biography

J. G. Devlin (8 October 1907 – 17 October 1991) was a Northern Irish actor. He made his stage debut in 1931 and had a long association with the Ulster Group Theatre.

Over a career spanning nearly sixty years he appeared in television productions including *Z-Cars*, *Dad's Army* (1970) as Patrick Regan, *The New Avengers* (1976) as a tramp and *Bread* (1986–1988) as Father Dooley. He guest-starred as Frank Ferris in the *Steptoe and Son* episode 'The Desperate Hours' (1972). His film roles included Tom Kerrigan in *Darby O'Gill and the Little People* (1959) and a villager in *Far and Away* (1992). The writers of *Steptoe and Son* later said he was their second choice for the part of Albert Steptoe.
