## Biography

John Stepan Zamecnik was an American composer and conductor. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he studied at the Prague Conservatory of Music under Antonín Dvořák before returning to the United States, where he played violin in the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra under Victor Herbert.

He became musical director at the Hippodrome Theater in Cleveland and later moved to Hollywood. Zamecnik composed extensively for silent films, producing photoplay music published by Sam Fox and contributing scores to films including *The Wedding March* (1928), *Wings* (1927) and *Cavalcade* (1933). He continued to supply music for sound films into the 1930s.
