## Biography

Jack Asher (29 March 1916 – April 1991) was an English cinematographer. Born in London, he began his career as a camera operator and made his debut as director of photography on *The Magic Bow* (1946).

He is best known for his work with Hammer Film Productions, serving as director of photography on several of their colour Gothic horror films, including *The Curse of Frankenstein* (1957), *Dracula* (1958), *The Revenge of Frankenstein* (1958), *The Hound of the Baskervilles* (1959), *The Mummy* (1959), *The Man Who Could Cheat Death* (1959), *The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll* (1960) and *The Brides of Dracula* (1960). He also worked on monochrome thrillers such as *The Camp on Blood Island* (1958) and non-Hammer productions including *Reach for the Sky* (1956).

His brother Robert Asher was a film and television director with whom he collaborated. Asher received a BAFTA nomination for Best British Cinematography (Colour) for *The Scarlet Blade* (1963).
