## Biography

Jack B. Sowards (1929–2007) was an American screenwriter and television writer. He wrote the screenplay for the feature film *Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan* (1982) and the *Star Trek: The Next Generation* episode 'Where Silence Has Lease' (1988). He created the term 'Kobayashi Maru' for the film.

Sowards studied at the University of Texas, Austin. His television credits include episodes of *The Streets of San Francisco*, *Barnaby Jones*, *Bonanza* (where he also served as story editor), *The High Chaparral* and *Daniel Boone*. He received a Writers Guild of America Award nomination for an episode of *The Bold Ones: The Lawyers*.

Sowards was nominated for a Saturn Award and shared a Hugo Award nomination for his work on *Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan*. He later taught screenwriting at UCLA. He died in Valley Village, California, from complications of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
