## Biography

Jack E. Cox, also credited as Jack Cox, John J. Cox or J. J. Cox, was an English cinematographer. He began as a camera assistant in 1913 and became a director of photography around 1920, working at studios including Stoll and British International Pictures.

Cox collaborated extensively with Alfred Hitchcock on early British films, serving as director of photography on *The Ring* (1927), *The Farmer's Wife* (1928), *Champagne* (1928), *Blackmail* (1929), *The Manxman* (1929), *Murder!* (1930), *The Skin Game* (1931), *Rich and Strange* (1931), *Number Seventeen* (1932) and *The Lady Vanishes* (1938). He later worked at Gainsborough Pictures on titles such as *The Wicked Lady* (1945) and continued into the 1950s on comedies.

A member of the British Society of Cinematographers, Cox photographed around 85 to 90 films over more than three decades. He died in Surrey on 29 July 1960.
