## Fi1m on Jack Farthing

> Jack Farthing gives polished, privileged men enough uncertainty to make them worth watching. We like his restraint and his contribution to *Poldark*, though the familiar class-conscious casting can make the work seem narrower than it needs to be.

George Warleggan in *Poldark* (2015) makes it worth looking past the leading man. Farthing gives Ross's rival enough presence to hold our attention in a series firmly organised around Aidan Turner's appeal. His measured playing suits the ambitious, socially uncertain men he is often asked to portray. He is good at suggesting that someone with all the outward advantages might still feel he has something to prove.

The early casting made that territory familiar. Freddie Threepwood in *Blandings* (2013–2014) brought him notice, and George Balfour in *The Riot Club* (2014) put him in another class-conscious setting. By the time *Poldark* made him more widely recognised, the risk of being treated simply as a posh actor was clear. Farthing has said he seeks parts that push against that type, and the wish is understandable.

*Poldark* gives that quality time to develop over a long television run. Farthing is part of an ensemble that lets the romantic complications occupy our attention even when Ross is elsewhere. We warmed to the supporting cast because he, Eleanor Tomlinson and Kyle Soller gave those scenes enough personality to hold our attention without the lead. The reservation is with the writing: the bankers receive less patience than the romance. Farthing helps, but we would not pretend that his contribution makes the imbalance disappear.

The film work includes Charles, Prince of Wales, in *Spencer* (2021), where his understated playing gives some thought to the person beneath the public role. There is also Joe in *The Lost Daughter* (2021), Maggie Gyllenhaal's directorial debut. These are supporting roles, suited to the measured acting that makes his television work worth watching.

*Rain Dogs* (2023) gives him a contemporary role as Florian Selby, a useful change of setting. We would like to see more directors ask something of him beyond variations on privilege, rather than leave him to find fresh uncertainty in another socially assured man. Start with *Poldark* for the ensemble, and allow for writing that gives its leading man rather more help.
