## Biography

Jack McGowan (12 January 1894 – 28 May 1977) was an American writer and actor. Born in Muskegon, Michigan, he began his career on Broadway after the First World War, making his debut in the 1919 show *Take It from Me*. He went on to write books for several musicals, including *Girl Crazy* (1930) with the Gershwins and Guy Bolton, and *Hold Everything* (1928).

McGowan moved into screenwriting in the early 1930s. His credits include the screenplay for *Broadway Melody of 1936* (1935), *Born to Dance* (1936), *Babes in Arms* (1939) and *Broadway Melody of 1940* (1940). He also contributed to *Broadway Melody of 1938* (1937), *Little Nellie Kelly* (1940), *Panama Hattie* (1942) and *It Happened in Brooklyn* (1947).
