## Biography

Jack Pulman (1925–1979) was a British television screenwriter known for his adaptations of literary works. Born and raised in London, he specialised in large-scale serials for the BBC, including the 20-episode *War and Peace* (1972–73) and the opening episodes of *Poldark* (1975).

His most celebrated work was the 13-part *I, Claudius* (1976), adapting Robert Graves's novels. He also wrote the screenplay for the film *Kidnapped* (1971) and the 1961 feature *The Best of Enemies*. Pulman contributed episodes to *Fall of Eagles* (1974) and adapted *The Portrait of a Lady* (1968) and *Crime and Punishment* (1979).

His final scripts were for the series *Private Schulz* (1981), for which his widow, actress Barbara Young, accepted a posthumous Royal Television Society award in 1982. He died in London in 1979.
