## Biography

Jack Rosenthal (1931–2004) was an English playwright and screenwriter. He began his career writing for Granada Television, contributing 129 episodes of *Coronation Street* in the 1960s before creating sitcoms such as *The Dustbinmen* and *The Lovers*.

Rosenthal wrote numerous single plays for BBC strands including *Play for Today*. He received BAFTA awards for *Bar Mitzvah Boy* (1976), *The Evacuees* (1975) and *Spend, Spend, Spend* (1977). In 1983 he co-wrote the screenplay for the feature film *Yentl* with Barbra Streisand. He also devised the long-running series *London's Burning*.

He married actress Maureen Lipman in 1974. Rosenthal was appointed CBE and is noted for drawing on his Manchester Jewish background in much of his work.
