## Fi1m on Jack Williams

> Jack Williams, writing always with his brother Harry, makes thrillers about the people a crime leaves behind, told across broken timelines and in unfamiliar settings. *The Missing* (2014) shows what that can do with one family and one question.

A father in a crowded French bar lets go of his small son's hand, and the boy is gone. That is the start of *The Missing* (2014), and it tells you most of what Jack Williams is interested in. Not the crime, which takes a second, but the years after it: the same man back in the same town, older and thinner and certain he has found something, while the series cuts between the summer he lost the boy and the winter he came back. Williams and his brother Harry, who write everything together, care about what waiting does to people. The answer to the puzzle comes a long way second.

It took them a while to get there. The brothers began in comedy in the mid-2000s, on *Roman's Empire* (2007) and *Hotel Babylon* (2009), and neither did much for them. *The Missing* was their first long-form drama, and it changed the shape of the career: they founded Two Brothers Pictures the same year and have since turned out a run of thrillers, *Liar* (2017), *The Widow* (2019), *Baptiste* (2019), which took the French detective from *The Missing* and gave him his own series, *The Tourist* (2022) and *The Assassin* (2025). The habits are consistent. The setting is somewhere the characters do not belong. The timeline is fractured. There are more suspects than a viewer can hold in one hand, and the series is built to be watched twice.

We have reviewed only *The Missing*, and our view of it is clear. The first eight episodes are among the best British crime television of their decade, and they hurt us more than we were ready for, because James Nesbitt plays Tony Hughes as a man who has organised his whole life around not accepting a fact, and the two-timeline structure keeps putting the hopeful summer father next to the wrecked winter one. The second series, which moves to another family and another country, is more elaborate and less sure. That is the risk in the method. The more countries and suspects and timelines the brothers add, the more the plotting shows, and the people we are meant to be waiting with get harder to see.

Williams knows the problem. "People are sophisticated and watch a lot of TV and are wise to the rules of every genre and you have to work twice as hard to surprise people," he has said. The best of *The Missing* suggests the surprise is not where the work should go. Start with the first series, at home, two episodes at a time, and do not expect to feel better for it.
