## Biography

Jacques Fonteray (1918–2013) was a French costume designer. He trained at the École des beaux-arts de Lille and the École supérieure des arts décoratifs de Paris. After the Second World War he began working in film, initially sketching costumes for Marcel Carné; his first major credit came in 1963 on *La Fabuleuse Aventure de Marco Polo*.

He designed costumes for more than fifty films, including *Barbarella* (1968), *Borsalino* (1970), *Delusions of Grandeur* (1971), *Hibernatus* (1969), *The Party* (1980) and *Moonraker* (1979). Fonteray collaborated frequently with directors such as Gérard Oury, Francis Girod and Roger Vadim, and created costumes for actors including Romy Schneider and Jane Fonda. His drawings are held by the Cinémathèque française.
