## Biography

Jacques Renard is a French director, writer and cinematographer. Born in Béthune in 1944, he began in the camera department on films including *Army of Shadows* (1969) and worked as assistant camera on *The Mother and the Whore* (1973), in which he also appeared as Alexandre’s friend.

He served as cinematographer on Jacques Rivette’s *Céline and Julie Go Boating* (1974). Renard’s first feature as director was *Monsieur Albert* (1976), which he also wrote. He later directed *Blanche et Marie* (1985) and numerous television films and series.

Renard has also made documentaries, notably drawing on the oral history of miners in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais coalfield.
