## Biography

Jacques Tati was a French filmmaker, actor and screenwriter. Born Jacques Tatischeff, he began his career in the 1930s as a music-hall performer specialising in mime and comic impersonations before appearing in films.

He wrote and directed six feature films, in four of which he played the character Monsieur Hulot. These include *Jour de fête* (1949), *Monsieur Hulot's Holiday* (1953), *Mon Oncle* (1958), *PlayTime* (1967) and *Trafic* (1971). His unproduced 1950s script was adapted into the 2010 animated film *The Illusionist*, on which he is credited in archive footage as Monsieur Hulot.
