James Agee was an American writer, film critic and screenwriter. He was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, on 27 November 1909 and died in New York City on 16 May 1955.

Agee wrote the screenplay for *The African Queen* (1951) in collaboration with John Huston, and the screenplay for *The Night of the Hunter* (1955). He is also known for the 1941 book *Let Us Now Praise Famous Men* and the novel *A Death in the Family*, published posthumously in 1957 and awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1958.
