## Biography

James Beck was an English actor. Born Stanley James Carroll Beck in Islington, London, he attended Saint Martin's School of Art and served in the British Army as a physical training instructor during national service before beginning his acting career in the theatre.

Beck is best known for playing the cockney spiv Private Joe Walker in the BBC sitcom *Dad's Army* from 1968 until his death in 1973. He also appeared in other television series including *Romany Jones* (1972–73) as Bert Jones, and had uncredited roles in films such as *Star!* (1968) and *Carry On Loving* (1970).

Beck died on 6 August 1973 in Roehampton, London, aged 44.
