James Bridges was an American screenwriter, film director, producer and actor. He was born on 3 February 1936 in Arkansas and died on 6 June 1993 in Los Angeles.

Bridges began his career writing episodes of *The Alfred Hitchcock Hour* and other television series. He received Academy Award nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay for *The Paper Chase* (1973) and Best Original Screenplay for *The China Syndrome* (1979).

His other notable credits include writing and directing *Urban Cowboy* (1980), *Perfect* (1985) and *Bright Lights, Big City* (1988), and writing the screenplay for *White Hunter, Black Heart* (1990). His longtime partner was actor and producer Jack Larson, who collaborated on several of his films.
