## Fi1m on James Caan

> James Caan made tough men interesting by letting impatience and vulnerability show through the swagger. We value him most in company, where his restless energy changes the pace of a scene without overwhelming the other actors.

In *The Godfather* (1972), James Caan's Sonny Corleone brings impatience into a family accustomed to having its authority taken seriously. He makes the solemn exchanges livelier, and we felt a welcome relief when his energy interrupted their weight. Francis Ford Coppola gives that energy useful company: Al Pacino's Michael rewards attention to small changes, while Robert Duvall's Tom Hagen is quieter. Caan supplies a different pace without looking as though he has wandered in from another film. We would recommend the performance for its place in the ensemble as much as for its force.

His tough men are worth watching because their swagger does not make them invulnerable. Impulsiveness unsettles the confidence, and Caan allows for quieter feeling as well as aggression. In Sonny's case, the volatility also helps a long, patient family drama avoid becoming ponderous. We enjoy the contrast with Duvall in particular: two actors contributing quite different kinds of energy to the same exchanges. Caan's forcefulness is more useful here than it would be in a film that asked everyone around him to stand back.

The danger was that casting would notice the toughness and forget the rest. Coppola had already worked with him in *The Rain People* (1969), before *Brian's Song* (1971) and *The Godfather* brought the breakthroughs. The former gave him an emotionally demanding part as football player Brian Piccolo; there was little reason to assume that imposing men were all he could play. Yet tough men and heroes became a recurring restriction. His subsequent films varied in quality, and the parts did not always ask enough of him.

Michael Mann's *Thief* (1981) is a useful next stop, with Caan's Frank giving a heist film a firm, brooding centre. In *Misery* (1990), he plays captive author Paul Sheldon opposite Kathy Bates, a role that makes his familiar physical assurance less useful. Both offer reasons to look beyond Sonny, without pretending that every detour in his filmography deserves equal attention. Start with *The Godfather*, though, and watch how much Caan contributes simply by refusing to move at everybody else's pace.

## Biography

James Caan was an American actor. Born in the Bronx, New York, he trained at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre and began his career in stage productions and television before moving into film.

He first gained wide attention for his role in the television film *Brian's Song* (1971). Caan came to prominence playing Sonny Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola's *The Godfather* (1972), a performance that earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor; he reprised the role in a cameo in *The Godfather Part II* (1974).

His other notable film roles include *Thief* (1981), *Misery* (1990), *Bottle Rocket* (1996), *Dogville* (2003) and *Elf* (2003). He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1978.
