## Fi1m on James Earl Jones

> James Earl Jones could make authority sound reassuring or dangerous, but we value him most when the warmth comes through. His Mufasa has a father’s steadiness without the strain of someone determined to sound important.

Mufasa’s voice in *The Lion King* (1994) is deep and assured, but James Earl Jones does not make every line sound like a ruling. We were moved by the warmth of his delivery, which lets a father sound reassuring without losing his authority. The film can labour its lessons, so it helps to have a performance this free of self-importance. He sounds as though he is speaking to someone, rather than making sure everyone is listening.

His film debut was as Lt. Lothar Zogg in Stanley Kubrick’s *Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb* (1964). Kubrick makes the people in charge horribly recognisable, however absurd their behaviour becomes. It is an amusing starting point for someone later asked so often to make authority seem credible. His stage breakthrough came as Jack Jefferson in *The Great White Hope* (1969), followed by the film version in 1970. That substantial dramatic work matters when considering an actor so readily remembered for his voice.

Voicing Darth Vader in the original *Star Wars* trilogy (1977–1983) brought wide recognition and put the same vocal depth to more threatening use. Authority remained a frequent requirement, including as Vice Admiral James Greer in *The Hunt for Red October* (1990). The limitation was in the casting: a distinctive voice and imposing presence could leave him being asked for another variation on the man in charge. He kept a parallel stage career, playing Troy Maxson in August Wilson’s *Fences* (1987), work that belongs beside the voice performances when considering what he could do.

Back in *The Lion King*, the pleasure is in hearing two quite different actors make the moral distinctions clear without flattening their characters. Jeremy Irons’s Scar is clipped and disdainful, funny without becoming harmless, and Jones’s warmth gives that performance a useful contrast. Irons supplies the sharper wit, while Jones makes the family drama worth caring about. The writing can still over-explain, and neither voice performance excuses that habit. Start with *The Lion King* for Jones; the affection in his voice is worth listening for.

## Biography

James Earl Jones was an American actor whose screen career began with the role of Lt. Lothar Zogg in *Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb* (1964). He trained at the University of Michigan, where he earned a B.A. in drama in 1953, and studied acting in New York with Lee Strasberg. His early work included stage productions with the New York Shakespeare Festival.

Jones is known for voice performances as Darth Vader in the *Star Wars* films (1977–1983, with later appearances) and Mufasa in *The Lion King* (1994 and 2019). He received Tony Awards for *The Great White Hope* (1968) and *Fences* (1987), and won two Emmy Awards. He died on 9 September 2024.
