## Biography

James Edward Grant (2 July 1905 – 19 February 1966) was an American screenwriter and short-story writer. Born in Chicago, Illinois, he began writing for films in the mid-1930s and contributed to more than fifty productions between 1935 and 1971.

He collaborated frequently with John Wayne, writing the screenplays for twelve of the actor’s projects from *Angel and the Badman* (1947), which he also directed, to *Circus World* (1964). His credits include *Hondo* (1953), *The Alamo* (1960), on which he also served as associate producer, *The Comancheros* (1961), *McLintock!* (1963) and *Donovan’s Reef* (1963). Grant won the Bronze Wrangler award twice, for *The Alamo* (1961) and *The Comancheros* (1962), and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for *The Sheepman* (1958, shared with William Bowers).

He also wrote numerous short stories published in magazines including *Argosy*, *The Saturday Evening Post*, *Cosmopolitan* and *Liberty*. Grant died of cancer in Burbank, California.
