## Biography

James Goldman (1927–1998) was an American playwright and screenwriter. He wrote the play *The Lion in Winter* (1966) and its 1968 film adaptation, for which he received an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.

His other screenplays include *They Might Be Giants* (1971), *Nicholas and Alexandra* (1971), *Robin and Marian* (1976) and *White Nights* (1985). He wrote the book for the musical *Follies* (1971) with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and collaborated with his brother, screenwriter William Goldman, on several stage works. Some later credits, including the miniseries *Queenie* (1987), appeared under the name Winston Beard. He was born in Chicago and died in New York City.
