Hayden served as a medic in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. After his discharge he attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York and began his acting career. He appeared in films including *Cruising* (1980), *The First Deadly Sin* (1980) and *The Nesting* (1981).

On stage he performed in the Broadway revivals of *A View from the Bridge* (1983) and *American Buffalo* (1983), the latter alongside Al Pacino. His best-known screen role, as Patrick 'Patsy' Goldberg in *Once Upon a Time in America* (1984), was released after his death.
