## Fi1m on James Hong

> We value James Hong for the humanity he brings to small parts and the care behind that distinctive voice. The limitation is often the writing: a familiar character still needs something new to do.

In *Kung Fu Panda 4* (2024), James Hong's Mr Ping goes after Po with a noodle cart, a bad plan and another father for company. Hong supplies the anxiety; Bryan Cranston's Li supplies the enthusiasm. We rate Hong for the humanity he brings to supporting parts, but this film gives him too little room to make that worry count. The script by Jonathan Aibel, Glenn Berger and Darren Lemke keeps returning to the same contrast between the two fathers.

His career began with dubbing and small film and television roles in the 1950s, and too many of the parts available to him were restricted by stereotypes. *Blade Runner* (1982) gives him Chew, an eye manufacturer, within Ridley Scott's densely imagined city. It is a brief part, but Hong gives the man enough humanity to register amid the film's imposing surroundings. We recommend the film with patience for its chilly pace; Hong is one reason to notice the people as well as the buildings.

John Carpenter's *Big Trouble in Little China* (1986) gave him the villain David Lo Pan, while *Kung Fu Panda* (2008) gave him a recurring part as an adoptive father. Those jobs ask different things of an actor too often confined to authority figures or enigmatic supporting characters. The voice work matters because Mr Ping gets to return, with a family connection already established. The attention brought by his supporting role as Gong Gong in *Everything Everywhere All at Once* (2022) is a good reason to go back to Chew.

Hong supplies directors with several readings of the same line in different moods, an approach that suggests care rather than reliance on a recognisable sound. That flexibility cannot solve *Kung Fu Panda 4*'s problem: Christopher Knights cuts so briskly that little is allowed to be sad for more than a beat. We grew impatient with the fathers' excursion because their contrasting temperaments kept producing another joke instead of a developing relationship. Hong remains well suited to the anxious parent, but the film needs to let him do more than repeat the anxiety. A script that lets him finish worrying before the next joke would be welcome.
