James McCausland (23 July 1944 – 20 February 2022) was an American writer and journalist. He co-wrote the screenplay for the 1979 film *Mad Max* with George Miller.

Born in the Bronx, New York City, McCausland specialised in financial journalism. He worked for United Press International and Finance Magazine in the United States before moving to Australia in 1971. There he held editorial roles at *The Australian* and *The Age*. Miller recruited him after meeting him at a party, and McCausland wrote the screenplay from a one-page outline.

McCausland appeared uncredited in *Mad Max* as the bearded man with an apron. He later chaired the Melbourne International Comedy Festival from its founding in 1987 until 1993.
