## Fi1m on James McTeigue

> James McTeigue’s work as a director and producer is closely tied to the Wachowskis. *V for Vendetta* gives us good reason to follow him: he can make a thriller forceful and unsettling, even when he lets the speeches run too long.

In *V for Vendetta* (2006), a fixed mask holds our attention more effectively than another speech. Adrian Biddle’s cinematography lets that expression stay disturbing, while Hugo Weaving gives the man behind it enough conviction to make listening uncomfortable. We were uneasy about how readily we wanted to agree with him; Weaving makes the masked revolutionary persuasive without making him reassuring. James McTeigue has made a good thriller here, though he too often lets the dialogue explain what the image has already told us.

The Wachowski connection predates his feature directing: he was first assistant director on *The Matrix* (1999) and its 2003 sequels. The Wachowskis wrote and produced his feature debut, *V for Vendetta*, then produced his *Ninja Assassin* (2009). His subsequent directing credits include *The Raven* (2012) and *Breaking In* (2018). The later films have attracted complaints about repetitive action and formulaic plotting, reasons to be selective rather than follow every directing credit.

McTeigue gives the violence in *V for Vendetta* visual force, but some of it interrupts the thriller without deepening it. Lilly and Lana Wachowski’s screenplay has ambition, asking an action audience to sit still for questions about power and responsibility. Owen Paterson’s production design is harder to believe in: the dystopian setting looks too empty to suggest ordinary lives continuing beyond the central confrontation. A fuller sense of those lives would give the speeches something more concrete to refer to.

His producer credit on Lana Wachowski’s *The Matrix Resurrections* (2021) continues that association in a different role. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss make the romance worth considering, while the explanations and hard-to-read fights leave us less persuaded. We cannot isolate McTeigue’s contribution from a producer credit, and there is no reason to assign him either the actors’ success or the staging’s failures. For a clearer view of his directing, start with *V for Vendetta*, allowing for the lectures.
