## Biography

James Mitchell was a British screenwriter and novelist. He was born on 12 March 1926 in South Shields and died on 15 September 2002 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The son of a shipyard worker, he studied at Oxford, where he received BA and MA degrees, and later taught for around fifteen years before moving to London in 1968 to write full time. He also wrote under the pseudonyms James Munro and Patrick O. McGuire.

Mitchell created the ITV series *Callan* (1967–1972) and the BBC series *When the Boat Comes In* (1976–1981). He wrote episodes of *The Avengers* (five episodes, 1961–1963), *The Troubleshooters* and *Justice*, among other television dramas. He was nominated for a BAFTA award.
