## Fi1m on James Norton

> James Norton makes charm feel unreliable, and we like him best when a part leaves decency in doubt. He can enliven familiar drama, though he cannot do much with a part that has barely been written.

Sean Rafferty's charm in *House of Guinness* (2025) leaves his decency in doubt. James Norton makes that uncertainty entertaining, giving familiar material a threat it might otherwise lack. We enjoyed his performance because we could not quite decide how far to trust Rafferty. He also makes some of the surrounding drama look too well behaved, although Knight spreads the attention too widely for any single character to become indispensable.

The breakthrough came with Tommy Lee Royce in *Happy Valley* (2014) and the vicar Sidney Chambers in *Grantchester* (2014). One offered cruelty with damage beneath it; the other let him carry a series as a more sympathetic man. Writer and director Sally Wainwright is a good collaborator for an actor who can show the damage behind cruelty. Prince Andrei Bolkonsky in *War & Peace* (2016) and Alex Godman in *McMafia* (2018) followed, taking him through period drama and contemporary thriller.

*Bob Marley: One Love* (2024) shows what happens when there is scarcely a character to find. His Chris Blackwell is sympathetic and well dressed, with little else to distinguish him. Anna B. Sheppard's costumes are convincing, but the screenplay gives him so little to do that we are left noticing the linen. The limitation is worth keeping in mind when judging an actor whose television parts ask rather more of him. We would not recommend this film for Norton, however much we enjoy him elsewhere.

The risk is that the threatening parts become too easy to predict. He turned down a villain role in *Playing Nice* (2025) to avoid being typecast. That is a sensible precaution, though choosing a different sort of man will only help if the writing gives him something to work with. Start with *House of Guinness* for his unsettling charm, and allow for the programme's uneven pace.

James Geoffrey Ian Norton is an English actor. Born on 18 July 1985 in Lambeth, London, he studied theology at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, before training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA).

He is known for his role as Tommy Lee Royce in the television series *Happy Valley* (2014–2023), for which he received a BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actor in 2015, as well as appearances in *Grantchester* (2014–2019), *War & Peace* (2016) and *McMafia* (2018). Film roles include John Brooke in *Little Women* (2019) and Gareth Jones in *Mr. Jones* (2019).

Norton played Chris Blackwell in the film *Bob Marley: One Love* (2024) and Sean Rafferty in the series *House of Guinness* (2025). He has also appeared in *House of the Dragon* and *King & Conqueror* (2025).
