James Whitaker is an American cinematographer born on 7 October 1970 in St. Louis, Missouri. He is a member of the American Society of Cinematographers and has also directed for television.

His feature credits as director of photography include *Thank You for Smoking* (2005), *Running Scared* (2006), *Crossing Over* (2009), *Stolen* (2012), *One for the Money* (2012) and *Cobain: Montage of Heck* (2015). Television work includes *Patriot* (2015–2018), for which he also directed one episode, *Hawkeye* (2021) and the limited series *DTF St. Louis* (2026). He has collaborated repeatedly with writer-director Steve Conrad.

Whitaker received a Primetime Emmy nomination for cinematography on the documentary *Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck*. He is married to Nicole Hirsch Whitaker.
