## Fi1m on Jamie Bell

> Jamie Bell makes troubled men worth watching without making them easy to forgive. His quietest acting moves us most, though even his restraint cannot rescue writing that insists on explaining what he has already shown.

In *All of Us Strangers* (2023), Jamie Bell lowers his eyes and hardly moves, letting a father struggle with what he has to say. We were moved by that stillness, because Bell makes the difficulty of speaking visible without adding a flourish. Andrew Haigh gives him room, and Bell knows how much to leave alone. Alongside Claire Foy as Mum, his Dad loves a son whose adult life he does not quite understand. These family scenes are the strongest reason to see the film, even when the romance beside them feels thinner.

Bell began with *Billy Elliot* (2000), at fourteen, and his early dance training remains a resource for physically demanding roles. His subsequent work moved between independent dramas and studio films, including Edgar in Bong Joon-ho's *Snowpiercer* (2013) and Bernie Taupin in *Rocketman* (2019). Strained family ties recur through those changes of genre. In Haigh's film, his physical control is there in the smallness of his gestures, with no need for a speech to tell us how much the conversation costs him.

*Half Man* (2026) asks more of that ability to contain contradictory feelings, with Bell playing Niall opposite Richard Gadd's Ruben. Both actors allow hurt and cruelty to remain visible, so sympathy for either man never feels comfortably settled. Bell sustains our interest in Niall without tidying him into someone easy to approve of. The series makes that work harder than it needs to: across six episodes, suffering repeats and the writing explains people we would rather discover for ourselves. The performances are worth following, provided a tolerance for repetition comes with an interest in the cast.

We trust Bell most when a scene leaves something for him to work out without saying it aloud. Haigh allows that uncertainty in a father's response to his son, while *Half Man* too often explains what its actors have already made apparent. We would rather watch Bell hesitate than hear a script account for every feeling, and the writing does not always give him that choice. Start with *All of Us Strangers* for Bell; make allowances for the romance.
