## Fi1m on Jamie Dornan

> Jamie Dornan is most persuasive when a character gives his reserve a purpose. We value his quieter supporting work, but *Fifty Shades of Grey* shows how easily his seriousness can leave another actor doing the scene’s work.

In *Fifty Shades of Grey* (2015), Dakota Johnson keeps trying to get a response from Jamie Dornan, and his Christian Grey remains firmly serious. We grew tired of their conversations because she had to supply the curiosity for both of them. Sam Taylor-Johnson gives the film a careful polish, while Kelly Marcel’s dialogue keeps the pair discussing their arrangement without making them more revealing. Dornan has an unrewarding part, but he does too little to rescue it. We find him more persuasive when there is something specific behind that reserve.

His breakthrough in *The Fall* (2013–2016) helps explain why that quality attracted attention. Paul Spector is a serial killer whose ordinary manner conceals something darker, a part that gives his guardedness a practical use. The *Fifty Shades* trilogy (2015–2018) followed, putting him at the centre of a romance. The casting makes sense on paper, but the first film needs us to enjoy his company, and too much of it consists of waiting for him to respond.

Later parts include Pa in Kenneth Branagh’s *Belfast* (2021) and a television thriller lead in *The Tourist* (2022–2024). Branagh uses him more quietly in *A Haunting in Venice* (2023), as Dr Leslie Ferrier, a father whose nerves have not recovered from the war. His solemn son, Leopold, looks after him. Dornan plays the doctor small, which lets the reversal between parent and child do much of the work. Jude Hill is the stronger presence as Leopold, but Dornan gives him a convincingly fragile adult to worry about.

That is a useful supporting performance in a film whose faults matter. The atmosphere holds better than the mystery, whose clues are obvious and whose solution is rushed. Dornan does not need to dominate such a film to make a worthwhile contribution. Try *A Haunting in Venice* for the quieter work, with expectations for the detective story kept low.
