## Biography

Jane Baker was an English television and film writer who worked extensively in collaboration with her husband Pip Baker. Together they contributed scripts to the BBC science-fiction series *Doctor Who* (1963) in the 1980s, including *The Mark of the Rani* (1985), *Terror of the Vervoids* (1986), *The Ultimate Foe* (1986) and *Time and the Rani* (1987). They also wrote novelisations of these stories and created the character of the Rani.

The Bakers scripted the episode "A Matter of Balance" (1976) for *Space: 1999* (1975). Their other television work included the CBBC series *Watt on Earth* (1991–1992), which they created and wrote, as well as episodes of series such as *Z Cars* and *The Expert*. Earlier credits encompassed films including *Night of the Big Heat* (1967) and *Captain Nemo and the Underwater City* (1970).

Jane Baker was born on 30 December 1924 and died on 8 September 2014.
