## Biography

Jane Withers was an American actress. She began her career as a child performer in the 1930s and appeared in numerous films for 20th Century Fox.

Withers played Vashti Snythe in the 1956 film *Giant*. Earlier she had gained attention for her role opposite Shirley Temple in *Bright Eyes* (1934). As an adult she was known for portraying Josephine the Plumber in a long-running series of television commercials for Comet cleanser. She also provided voice work as the gargoyle Laverne in *The Hunchback of Notre Dame* (1996) and its sequel (2002), and made guest appearances in series including *Murder, She Wrote* and *The Love Boat*.

Withers was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on 12 April 1926 and died in Burbank, California, on 7 August 2021.
