## Fi1m on Jane Wu

> Jane Wu is a storyboard artist who became a director, and it shows: on *Blue Eye Samurai* she stages sword fights you can follow stroke by stroke. We have reviewed one series of hers, and we would watch the next for the action alone.

Watch any duel in *Blue Eye Samurai* (2023) and notice what you are not doing: squinting. The blade is always in frame, the arm it belongs to is always clear, and when a cut comes it is because something has changed, not because somebody got nervous. That is a storyboard artist's discipline, and Jane Wu spent two decades acquiring it before she took the supervising director's chair.

The career runs in three phases. She began in fashion and costume design, then moved into animation in the late 1990s as a character designer and cleanup artist at Sony, rising to supervising director on *Men in Black: The Animated Series* and *Jackie Chan Adventures*, credited then as Jane Wu Soriano. From the late 2000s she worked as a storyboard artist on live action, including *The Avengers* (2012), *Game of Thrones* (2016) and *Mulan* (2020), with a story credit on *Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse* (2018). *Blue Eye Samurai*, which she supervised, produced and directed episodes of alongside co-creators Michael Green and Amber Noizumi, is where the two halves of that career meet.

What she brought back from live action is a way of thinking about the camera. She has described the series as an eight-hour film, with lensing and stunt references taken from the kind of production she had been boarding, and the duels bear this out: they are staged as fights between bodies with weight, not as flurries of lines. She trained in wushu, and the choreography is built the way a martial artist builds it, each move answering the last. The character animation borrows from bunraku puppetry, which is an odd thing to put in an action series and turns out to be exactly right for one set in Japan, where she was determined the story should stay. We scored the series 79, and most of that number is the fighting. One early duel had us leaning forward and counting strokes, because for once we could.

The caveat is the one in our review. Between the fights the series talks, and the talk is less sure of itself. A director who thinks in boards can draw a fight to the inch and still not know when a scene of two people in a room should end. Whether that is hers to answer for or the writers', one series does not tell us. Most of her career has been spent on other people's films, in a job the viewer is not meant to see, so there is less of a record to judge her by than her credits suggest.

She has since directed on *Interview with the Vampire* (2025) and stays on as director and executive producer for the second series of *Blue Eye Samurai*. We would like to see what she does when the swords are put down.

## Biography

Jane Wu, also credited as Jane Wu Soriano, is an American-Taiwanese director, producer and storyboard artist. Wu directed episodes of animated series including *Men in Black: The Series* and *Jackie Chan Adventures*. She later became a storyboard artist on numerous feature films, including *The Avengers* (2012), *Guardians of the Galaxy* (2014), *Mulan* (2020) and *Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse* (2018), as well as series such as *Game of Thrones*. She is trained in wushu martial arts, which has informed her action sequences.

Wu served as supervising director and producer on the Netflix animated series *Blue Eye Samurai* (2023), directing multiple episodes. The series won Annie Awards and she received a Primetime Emmy. She has been signed to Verve and is executive producer on the second season.
