## Biography

Jaromír Šofr is a Czech cinematographer. Born on 20 September 1939 in Brno, he studied cinematography at the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts (FAMU) in Prague from 1956, graduating in 1961 with Věra Chytilová’s short film *Strop*.

He is best known for his long collaboration with director Jiří Menzel on films including *Closely Watched Trains* (1966), *My Sweet Little Village* (1985), *Cutting It Short* (1981) and *I Served the King of England* (2007). Šofr also worked with other Czechoslovak New Wave directors such as Jan Němec on *The Party and the Guests* (1966) and Evald Schorm.

He received the Český lev for best cinematography for *I Served the King of England* and has been awarded several other prizes for his work. Šofr later taught at FAMU, where he headed the camera department from 1990 to 2005.
