## Fi1m on Jason Clarke

> Jason Clarke is at his most unsettling when he makes a cruel man's work look ordinary. We rate his restrained authority highly, particularly under Kathryn Bigelow; he gives these men credibility without asking us to forgive them.

In *Zero Dark Thirty* (2012), Jason Clarke's Dan carries out prisoner abuse as though it belongs in the day's normal workload. We found him disturbing because he makes cruelty look routine, with no need to announce that we are watching a dangerous man. Kathryn Bigelow gives those scenes the same sober attention as the intelligence work, a choice we remain uneasy about. Clarke's restraint is effective, but it also helps explain our reservations about how the film presents torture.

Clarke's Hollywood breakthrough made an asset of his capacity to disturb. He had already led *Brotherhood* (2006–2008) as Tommy Caffee and moved into Hollywood supporting work before Dan brought wider recognition. The larger parts that followed included Malcolm, the lead human role in *Dawn of the Planet of the Apes* (2014), while *Mudbound* (2017) drew on his restraint within an ensemble. His preparation includes research, dialect work and physical training, although the performances we value do not make a display of the homework.

In *Oppenheimer* (2023), Christopher Nolan uses Clarke as Roger Robb, the lawyer questioning the physicist in a small room. Here the pressure comes through professional scrutiny, and Clarke is well cast as someone who can make an official proceeding feel hostile. Our enthusiasm for the film comes with a reservation about those hearings, which grip less than the desert passages. The third hour is too long. Clarke gives the questioning a credible adversary, but the scenes still ask for more patience than they earn.

Bigelow returned to him for Admiral Mark Miller in *A House of Dynamite* (2025), another authority figure in a procedural we liked, though repeating the same eighteen minutes three times costs it tension. We would like directors to keep testing his restraint, rather than simply handing him another rank or title. Start with *Zero Dark Thirty*, with fair warning about how plainly it presents torture.
