## Fi1m on Jason Reitman

> Jason Reitman gives quick-witted characters time to reveal how uncertain they are. We value his care with actors, especially in *Juno*; the *Ghostbusters* sequels frustrate us by interrupting their new characters to make room for familiar faces.

In *Juno* (2007), a pregnant teenager has a quip ready for almost every conversation, and Elliot Page lets us see the effort behind that confidence. Jason Reitman makes space for both the joke and the uncertainty. We were moved by Page's performance because the bravado never quite conceals how unprepared Juno feels. This is the Reitman we recommend: attentive to actors and willing to take a young person's feelings seriously.

Diablo Cody's dialogue sometimes works too hard to impress, and Reitman does not always discourage it. But he gives Michael Cera's hesitant Paulie Bleeker enough weight to challenge Juno's way of talking. Jennifer Garner's seriousness as Vanessa Loring and Jason Bateman's easier manner as Mark Loring invite us to keep reconsidering the adults, too. These supporting performances matter because Reitman allows them to complicate our first impressions without drawing attention away from Juno. He can make a comedy kinder without removing the awkwardness.

His feature debut, *Thank You for Smoking* (2005), established his interest in people facing morally awkward choices. After *Juno* came *Up in the Air* (2009), with its attention to isolation and connection, then *Young Adult* (2011) and *Tully* (2018). His work with Charlize Theron in *Tully* belongs to that continuing interest in believable, detailed performances. Again and again, his characters have to reconsider how they live and how they treat other people.

*Ghostbusters: Afterlife* (2021), which he directed and co-wrote, took him into franchise work, where that attention to people became less reliable. Its habit of looking back to the original team continues in *Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire* (2024), directed by Gil Kenan from a script they wrote together. The opening gives the Spengler family room to work in the New York firehouse, and for twenty minutes the arrangement holds. Then the returning characters keep arriving and the family loses its place in the story. Kenan directs, but Reitman shares responsibility for a script that keeps interrupting the people it asks us to follow.

With *Saturday Night* (2024), co-written with Kenan, Reitman turned to the first episode of *Saturday Night Live* and the disorder of live performance. It is a subject well suited to his interest in people under pressure. Start with *Juno*, provided you can forgive a teenager, and her screenwriter, for enjoying their own jokes.
