## Fi1m on Jay Mohr

> Jay Mohr is good at making an unpleasant man worth listening to. His quick delivery suits rivals and operators; the limitation is how often his parts ask for the same abrasive confidence.

Bob Sugar talks fast, and Jay Mohr makes that confidence irritating on purpose. As the rival sports agent in Cameron Crowe's *Jerry Maguire* (1996), he has a clear use for the brash delivery of his stand-up work. We laughed at Sugar because Mohr's sharp timing makes the man's abrasiveness funny without making him agreeable. Crowe's generous romantic comedy has room for someone this disagreeable.

The part was his film breakthrough, and it remains a sensible place to begin with him. Our enthusiasm for *Jerry Maguire* rests chiefly on Tom Cruise, Renée Zellweger and Cuba Gooding Jr., but Sugar helps explain why Mohr kept being cast as slick, fast-talking men. He can make a rival worth watching without asking us to excuse him. The limitation is that another agent or producer can start to seem like another opportunity to do the same thing, rather than a fresh character.

His first leading film role, Nick opposite Jennifer Aniston in *Picture Perfect* (1997), offered a route beyond the supporting parts. But the Hollywood producer Peter Dragon in *Action* (1999) was a more obvious use of his brash, rapid delivery. Leading *Gary Unmarried* (2008–2010) later gave him the divorced father Gary Brooks, while the film work continued largely in supporting parts. We would be wary of mistaking that repeated casting for the limit of what he can do.

By *Air* (2023), where he plays John Fisher for Ben Affleck, Mohr is back in a supporting role in a sports-business story. The film is quick, funny and well played, though its account of Nike signing Michael Jordan stays too close to the corporation's version. Matt Damon and Viola Davis are its chief attractions for us. It is a useful supporting credit, but not the film we would choose to explain Mohr's appeal.

What we would like more of is the timing, with less reliance on the familiar slickness. A part need not make him nicer, but it should give him something beyond another fast sales pitch. Start with *Jerry Maguire*, provided there is time for a romantic comedy that takes longer than it needs to.
