Jean Aurel (6 November 1925 – 26 August 1996) was a Romanian-born French screenwriter and film director. He began his career as a screenwriter in the 1950s, contributing to films including *Porte des Lilas* (1957) directed by René Clair.

His screenplay credits include the prison drama *Le Trou* (1960), co-written with Jacques Becker and José Giovanni. He later collaborated extensively with François Truffaut on *Love on the Run* (1979), *The Woman Next Door* (1981) and *Confidentially Yours* (1983).

As a director, Aurel made historical documentaries such as *Over There, 1914-18* (1963), which received an Academy Award nomination, and fiction films including *De l'amour* (1964) and *Lamiel* (1967).
