## Biography

Jean Bachelet (8 October 1894 – 26 February 1977) was a French cinematographer. He began his career as a newsreel cameraman for Gaumont in Russia between 1912 and 1914, returning to France at the outbreak of the First World War. From 1923 he worked as director of photography on feature films.

Bachelet collaborated intermittently with Jean Renoir over fifteen years, shooting ten of the director’s films. These included *Nana* (1926), *The Crime of Monsieur Lange* (1936), *The Lower Depths* (1936) and *The Rules of the Game* (1939). He was also a regular cinematographer for Sacha Guitry. Bachelet continued working into the 1950s before retiring to the south of France.
