## Biography

Jean Cocteau was a French director and writer. He directed and wrote *Orpheus* (1950), and also directed *Beauty and the Beast* (1946), *The Blood of a Poet* (1932) and *Testament of Orpheus* (1960). He was born Jean Maurice Eugène Clément Cocteau on 5 July 1889 in Maisons-Laffitte, Yvelines, France.

Cocteau worked across poetry, theatre and film. His other film credits include writing the dialogue for *Les Dames du bois de Boulogne* (1945) and providing the source material for *The Strange Ones* (1950). He died on 11 October 1963.
