## Biography

Jean-Joël Barbier was a French pianist, musicologist and writer who also acted. He played the role of The Priest in Robert Bresson's 1966 film *Au Hasard Balthazar* and performed the Andantino from Schubert's Piano Sonata No. 20 in A major for its soundtrack.

Born in Belfort on 25 March 1920, Barbier studied literature and music before the Second World War. He published *A Dictionary of French Musicians* in 1961 and recorded the complete piano works of Erik Satie. He died in Paris in 1994.
