## Biography

Jean Narboni is a French film critic, historian and academic. Born on 24 October 1937 in Chlef (then Orléansville), Algeria, he moved to Paris in the early 1960s, where he studied medicine and became a regular at the Cinémathèque française. He began writing for *Cahiers du cinéma* in 1963 and contributed to its modernist direction under Jacques Rivette.

Narboni has also appeared in a small number of films. He played Roger in Jean-Luc Godard’s *2 or 3 Things I Know About Her* (1967) and portrayed a character in the paintings in Raúl Ruiz’s *The Hypothesis of the Stolen Painting* (1978). He has taught film at the University of Paris VIII and at La Fémis, and directed the 1976 film *L’Olivier* with the Vincennes cinema group.
