## Fi1m on Jean-Pierre Cassel

> Jean-Pierre Cassel could make good manners funny without making them look false. We especially value his restraint in Buñuel’s comedy, though the charm that served him there could elsewhere leave an impression of little substance.

In *The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie* (1972), Jean-Pierre Cassel’s Henri Sénéchal expects dinner to proceed as dinner should. Luis Buñuel keeps finding reasons why it cannot, and Cassel does not advertise the absurdity. He belongs convincingly to this company of entitled people, even when their circumstances become implausible. We value that restraint: he lets us notice what is objectionable without pointing it out.

His early leads asked for more movement. *Les Jeux de l’amour* (1960) brought him prominence in Philippe de Broca’s comedies, playing an energetic, ingenuous comic hero. He was a trained dancer and musician, and physical timing was part of his acting. Jean Renoir’s *Le Caporal épinglé* (1962) and Jean-Pierre Melville’s *L’Armée des ombres* (1969) took him beyond those light comic leads.

Buñuel made particularly good use of the charm that could leave Cassel looking lightweight. Alongside Delphine Seyrig and Stéphane Audran, he helps make practised social manners funny without exaggerating them. We laughed because Cassel and his fellow diners remain so committed to having a civilised meal while Buñuel keeps interrupting it. Some of those interruptions repeat a joke we already understand, but the actors keep the company worth watching. Cassel does not need to make Henri grotesque to show us what is wrong with him.

The international work still had room for his comedy, including Louis XIII in Richard Lester’s *The Three Musketeers* (1973). Later parts included Georges Lelièvre in *La Cérémonie* (1995) and Father Lucien in Julian Schnabel’s *The Diving Bell and the Butterfly* (2007). We warmly recommend Schnabel’s film for its humour as well as its emotional force. Cassel’s reputation for being lightweight outlasted the early comedies. For Cassel himself, begin with Buñuel, and watch how little he needs to do to make these dinners funny.

## Biography

Jean-Pierre Cassel (born Jean-Pierre Crochon) was a French actor and dancer. Born in Paris on 27 October 1932, he died there on 19 April 2007. He began in small film roles in the 1950s and gained prominence in comedies directed by Philippe de Broca, including *Les Jeux de l'amour* (1960), *Le Farceur* (1960) and *L'Amant de cinq jours* (1961). He also appeared in films by directors such as Jean Renoir, Luis Buñuel and Claude Chabrol.

Cassel accumulated more than 200 film and television credits over five decades. Among his later roles was Father Lucien in *The Diving Bell and the Butterfly* (2007). He received a César Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for *La Cérémonie* (1995). He was the father of actors Vincent Cassel and Cécile Cassel, and rapper Mathias Cassel.
