In *Mon Oncle* (1958), Jean-Pierre Zola treats the rules of an automated house as matters deserving serious attention. As Monsieur Arpel, he cannot acknowledge how ridiculous those rules look without spoiling Jacques Tati's comedy. He and Adrienne Servantie give the Arpels a recognisable concern with appearances, even when their surroundings become absurd. We laughed at their obedience to the house because both actors make it look like something sensible people might attempt.

Sautet used him again as Hélène's father in *The Things of Life* (1970), while Frankenheimer gave him a small police role in *French Connection II* (1975). Jean-Pierre Zola was a French actor born on 5 February 1916 in Vienna, then part of Austria-Hungary. He moved to Cairo with his family at the age of eight and remained in Egypt until around 1956, when the Suez crisis prompted his relocation to France. There he settled in Paris and began a professional acting career.

His screen debut came in Jacques Tati's *Mon Oncle* (1958), in which he played Monsieur Arpel, the brother-in-law of Tati's character. He subsequently appeared in films including *The Train* (1964) as Octave, *The Sicilian Clan* (1969), *The Things of Life* (1970) and *French Connection II* (1975). A polyglot who spoke six languages, Zola also worked in German and American productions during the 1970s.

He died on 18 January 1979 in Maisons-Laffitte, France.
