Jean Stapleton was an American character actress of stage, television and film. She was born Jeanne Murray on 19 January 1923 in Manhattan, New York City, and died on 31 May 2013 in New York City.

Stapleton began her career in summer stock theatre in 1941 and made her New York stage debut in The Corn Is Green (1948). She appeared on Broadway in the original productions of Damn Yankees (1955), Bells Are Ringing (1956), Rhinoceros (1961) and Funny Girl (1964), and reprised her roles in the film adaptations of the first two musicals. She is best known for playing Edith Bunker, the wife of Archie Bunker, in the CBS sitcom All in the Family (1971–1979). The role brought her three Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series and two Golden Globe Awards.
