## Fi1m on Jean Yoon

> Jean Yoon is good at playing people who expect to be listened to. We value the practical authority she brings to *Tuner*, and the humour she finds in the family expectations of *Kim's Convenience*.

In *Tuner* (2026), Jean Yoon’s Dr Madeline Richard treats unusually acute hearing as a medical fact, not a marvel. We rate the steadiness of that choice: a story about a piano tuner putting his ears to work on locks needs someone who takes the cost of his hearing seriously. We were relieved by her matter-of-fact approach, because the film comes close to presenting an affliction as a special gift. She helps keep that idea from becoming too easy.

Her authority has more domestic uses as Umma in *Kim's Convenience* (2016–2021). Yoon originated the role in the 2011 play, then reprised it on television, working with playwright and co-creator Ins Choi and fellow actor Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Appa. The move from theatre to television made this the defining role of her career. Here, the household’s competing expectations about tradition and modern life give her room for humour as well as firmness, and a mother with more to do than tell everyone else how to behave.

The casting pattern is easy to spot: Dr Montague in *The Time Traveler's Wife* (2009), Captain Theresa Yao in *The Expanse* (2015), Dr Sato in *The Voyeurs* (2021). These are people whose instructions ought to carry weight. The risk in such casting is that a job title can do most of a supporting character’s writing, leaving an actor little beyond professional assurance. Michael Mohan’s *The Voyeurs* earns some patience through visual invention, but thin character writing and increasingly contrived plotting limit our enthusiasm.

Daniel Roher’s *Tuner* makes better use of her steadiness, with Woodall playing the hearing as something that costs him every day. Yoon supports that performance by declining to make the condition wondrous, helping a familiar story remain believable. It is the kind of supporting work worth noticing, though we would be wary of treating sensible doctors as all she has to offer. For the next film, we would welcome a part that gives her more room to be funny.
