She began acting at the Pasadena Playhouse and made her radio debut in 1932 while a student at Los Angeles City College. Her film roles included Lady Macbeth in Orson Welles’s *Macbeth* (1948) and Bertha Duncan in Fritz Lang’s *The Big Heat* (1953). She appeared as Nora Ericson in John Ford’s *The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance* (1962) and provided the voice of Norma Bates in *Psycho* (1960). Nolan received four Emmy nominations and had recurring roles in the series *The Virginian* (1962–1971) and *Dirty Sally* (1974).
