## Fi1m on Jeffrey Wright

> Jeffrey Wright is at his funniest when a clever man runs out of patience. We value the care he takes with a sigh or a lowered voice, and wish more films gave him as much to do as *American Fiction*.

In *American Fiction* (2023), Jeffrey Wright's Monk Ellison moves his novels from the African-American Studies shelf to Fiction while the bookshop staff watch. He corrects people and sighs, playing a writer whose intelligence has made him less able to tolerate company. Cord Jefferson gives Wright a leading role in which those small expressions of annoyance can sustain whole scenes. We laughed when Monk lowered his voice to telephone a publisher as Stagg, because Wright lets us hear how much he hates the performance. The comedy needs no raised voice, and Wright does not ask us to excuse Monk's manners.

That lead was not a new line of work for him. He had played Jean-Michel Basquiat for Julian Schnabel in *Basquiat* (1996), his first major film lead, before building a long run of supporting roles. Felix Leiter in *Casino Royale* (2006) became a recurring part in the Bond films, while Bernard Lowe in *Westworld* (2016) offered sustained television work. The danger of being so dependable in support is that the smaller parts begin to look like the natural fit. There is no sign of Wright needing to adjust his technique for Monk's larger part.

Wes Anderson has a use for his formal delivery in *Asteroid City* (2023), where General Gibson addresses the children with a fine stretch of military nonsense. Wright treats the speech seriously enough for its absurdity to land. In *The Phoenician Scheme* (2025), however, his Marty is one of a succession of business partners, and the repeated meetings leave little time for anyone to become a person. Editor Barney Pilling keeps those visits brisk, but speed cannot give Wright the time Jefferson allows him. We cannot blame an actor for having too little to play.

The reservation about *American Fiction* is larger than its leading performance: the sharp publishing satire and the gentler family drama never quite fit together. Wright's scowl holds our attention, but it cannot make those halves meet. What Jefferson gets right is letting us spend enough time with Monk to find his corrections and sighs funny without making him agreeable. Start with *American Fiction* for Wright, with some patience for the film around him.

## Biography
