## Fi1m on Jenni Konner

> Jenni Konner is a showrunner first and a director on two occasions, and her mark is the hardest kind to see: the one on the writing. *Girls* at its plainest is where we find it, and it is worth finding.

Watch the episodes of *Girls* (2012) in which Hannah is shut in a room with one other person and the show turns into a small, exact two-hander, and you are watching the writing at its plainest. The direction on the best of those is Richard Shepard's. The words are Lena Dunham's, with Jenni Konner and a staff that included Judd Apatow and Bruce Eric Kaplan, and that is the difficulty with Konner: the work we rate most highly has other people's names on it too. A showrunner's mark is the hardest kind to see. You have to look at what did not go wrong.

She came up as a writer, with her partner Alexandra Rushfield on *Undeclared* (2001) and then on two series that did not last, and spent time doctoring film scripts, *Transformers: Dark of the Moon* among them, before Dunham brought her in as co-showrunner on *Girls*. There she was known as the grown-up, the one who kept the writing staff working while Dunham was in front of the camera. We think that shows on screen. *Girls* is coarse, and the coarseness is carefully placed; somebody was deciding where. Its world is small and the middle seasons wander, but the best episodes are as honest as television gets, and we came away from more than one of them feeling we had been told something about ourselves we would sooner not have heard. The reason is the plainness. Nobody in those rooms is given a line that lets them off.

Her directing amounts to two episodes of *Girls*, the season-five finale and the last episode of all. She put it simply at the time: "I had been sitting next to the most talented people in the world for five years and watching them do their job and I really wanted an opportunity to direct the show before it ended." She had little experience and leaned on the cast and crew, and it looks like it: unfussy, one overhead shot at the close of her first episode inspired by *Taxi Driver*, and otherwise content to stay out of the actors' way. We would not call her a director on that evidence, and we doubt she would either.

Since 2018 she has run her own company and put her name on *Camping* (2018), which she created, wrote and directed on, *Welcome to Chippendales* (2022), *Single Drunk Female* (2022) and *Deli Boys*, before joining *Nobody Wants This* (2024) as co-showrunner and writer from its second season. We liked that one well enough. Kristen Bell and Adam Brody are convincing together and the supporting cast is funny, and the writing does too little with the religious difference it has put between them. That is a writing-room problem, and the writing room is now hers. Whether the show does more with it under her is the thing worth checking when you go back.
